Arduino compatible boards are compatible with Arduino hardware, but not always tested as compatible with Arduino tools before they are released. Therefore, it’s wise to check out the documentation for boards that are hardware compatible with Arduino shields. If they do claim software and tools compatibility, the open-source Arduino environment makes it easy to write code and upload it to boards. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The environment is written in Java and based on Processing, avr-gcc, and other open source software.
